Urban Habitat Chicago Earth Day 2011 Workshops

Join UHC for a series of hands-on workshops and activities to celebrate Earth Day! From 9am-2pm on Saturday, April 23rd our team of experienced urban farmers, educators, and designers will be on hand giving demonstrations and sharing their knowledge at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.  Learn about home stormwater management, get a how-to on seed-starting and organic gardening, experience the taste of local vegetables, and participate in a do-it-yourself vermicomposting workshop! All ages are welcome, and kids are FREE!

Adult Price: Fees are $15 per workshop or $60 for all five.

UHC or Peggy Notebaert Members Price: $10 per workshop or $50 for all five.

Free entrance to the museum is included in the ticket price!


Workshops Schedule:

09am:   Stormwater: Homefront with Nick Petty, Landscape Architect

Explore basic domestic stormwater management issues.  Participants will be introduced to innovative new products and techniques tailored toward conservation, capture, and reuse of our most valuable resource: water.

10am:   Organic Gardening with Mike Repkin, Ecological Designer

A participatory workshop providing an overview of organic gardening basics, including soil preparation, out-planting, plant maintenance, disease and pest control, and harvesting.

11am:   Seedstarting with Emily Lake, Director of Urban Agriculture

Summer's closer than you think! Learn to start your own seedlings indoors. We'll be starting tomatoes, basil, and zucchini. Materials provided.

12pm:   Indoor Air Quality Effects on Health Paula O'Connell, Interior Designer

70% of our health is affected by the air we breathe. What to look for in making safer decisions for your home, from paints to cleaning products to bedding.

01pm:   Vermicomposting with Emily Lake, Director of Urban Agriculture

Worms can eat your garbage, and require little maintenance!  Learn about how they can turn your food waste into fertilizer. Get started with your worms now!

 

Please join us for all workshops in the Science Lab.  Workshops last approximately 45 minutes.
